BANKNOTES FROM ECUADOR

HIGH DENOMINATION ECUADOR SET

Ecuador 001

In 2000 the US Dollar became legal tender in Ecuador and the use of the traditional Ecuadorian unit of currency – the Sucre – was discontinued. Dealers’ stocks of Sucres diminished fairly quickly and prices have risen noticeably over the past few years.

This set of four notes show two distinctly different styles. The 500 and 1000 Sucres are dated 1988 and 1986; they are of a design which dates back to the 1970’s. New designs were introduced in the late 1980’s, as illustrated here in the notes of 5000 and 10,000 Sucres dated 1999 and 1998.
