BANKNOTES FROM ENGLAND

THE BANK OF ENGLAND BRITANNIA ISSUES

England 001

Introduced in 1928, the “Britannia” style of £1 note was in circulation in Britain for over 30 years until it was replaced in 1960 by a more modern design with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1940, following the outbreak of WWII, the colour was changed from green to blue on a pink background, and a metal thread was put into the paper. This colour change remained until 1948 when it reverted to green.

The pair of notes that we offer here are in VF (Very Fine) condition.

Price: £10.00 per pair.

A PAIR OF £1 NOTES SIGNED BY J. B. PAGE

England 002

J. B. Page was Chief Cashier of the Bank of England from 1970 to 1980 and this period of time saw changes in the design of Bank of England £1, £5 and £10 notes. One major change was in the portrait of Queen Elizabeth, with a more mature portrait replacing that which had been used on English banknotes since 1960.

This pair of uncirculated notes illustrate the different designs and portraits of the Queen.

BANK OF ENGLAND 10 SHILLING NOTES

England 003

English 10 Shilling notes were phased out of circulation over 35 years ago as the country prepared for decimalisation and the introduction of the new 50 Pence coin. We can offer these notes in perfect mint condition for £5.00 each, or you can buy a pair for £9.50.

AN ENGLISH PROVINCIAL BANKNOTE FROM THE
STAMFORD, SPALDING AND BOSTON BANKING COMPANY LIMITED
English Provincial Banknote

It is not often that we can offer one of the old English Provincial banknotes as they are seldon available in any quantity. However we were fortunate to acquire a few of these £5 notes from the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Banking company Limited.

These notes were issued in 1898, at the very end of the English Provincial banking era. By this time most of the old local banks had either gone into liquidation or had already been taken over by the so called ‘High Street Banks’, and very few survived into the 1900’s.

The notes are generally in VF condition. They have various signatures, annotations and stamp impressions put on by the people, companies or banks who held them briefly before passing them on, so you can get an idea of how they were used and negotiated before being retired into the Bank’s archives. A fascinating piece of English banking history.

BANK OF ENGLAND WARTIME ISSUES
England 006
Following the outbreak of the Second World War the British Government had fears that the Germans would produce large quantities of forgeries of the 1 Pound and 10 Shilling notes. To combat this possibility a decision was made to change these currency notes, and in March 1940 the Bank of England introduced new colour varieties.

The new 1 Pound note was blue on a pink background and the 10 Shillings was dark mauve on a light mauve background. For extra security a metal thread was put through the paper for the first time.

We can offer a limited number of pairs of notes. These have all been in circulation and are generally in good Fine to Very Fine condition.

Price: £16.50 per pair.
