![]() Introduced in 1928, the “Britannia” style of £1 note was in circulation in Britain for over 30 years until it was replaced in 1960 by a more modern design with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1940, following the outbreak of WWII, the colour was changed from green to blue on a pink background, and a metal thread was put into the paper. This colour change remained until 1948 when it reverted to green. The pair of notes that we offer here are in VF (Very Fine) condition. Reference: ENGLAND 001 Price: £10.00 per pair. ![]() J. B. Page was Chief Cashier of the Bank of England from 1970 to 1980 and this period of time saw changes in the design of Bank of England £1, £5 and £10 notes. One major change was in the portrait of Queen Elizabeth, with a more mature portrait replacing that which had been used on English banknotes since 1960. This pair of uncirculated notes illustrate the different designs and portraits of the Queen. However we were fortunate to acquire a few of these £5 notes from the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Banking company Limited. These notes were issued in 1898, at the very end of the English Provincial banking era. By this time most of the old local banks had either gone into liquidation or had already been taken over by the so called ‘High Street Banks’, and very few survived into the 1900’s. The notes are generally in VF condition. They have various signatures, annotations and stamp impressions put on by the people, companies or banks who held them briefly before passing them on, so you can get an idea of how they were used and negotiated before being retired into the Bank’s archives. A fascinating piece of English banking history.
