These highly desirable and colourful notes were the first of the polymer issues, which have now completely replaced paper money in Romania.

The 2000 Lei note is particularly attractive, featuring an imaginative reproduction of the solar system to commemorate the event of a total eclipse of the sun over Romania in August 1999.
